Nationally Recognized Farmers Market Aims to Improve Health in Central Pennsylvania

The Farmers Market in Hershey opens season with continued focus on health education.

The award winning Farmers Market in Hershey & Summer Concert Series will kick off its fourth season Thursday, May 23rd at 2:30pm, at 12 15 Research Blvd in Hummelstown. In affiliation with Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, the market is a wellness-themed farmers market providing access to fresh, local produce and products, as well as free health screenings and family entertainment and education.

Recognizing a need for increased accessibility to healthy, locally grown foods, the market was established 4 years ago by faculty members at Penn State College of Medicine. Since then, the market has become a weekly gathering of local farmers, producers, artisans, musicians and health care professionals, all working together to promote healthy living. “With Central PA’s rich agricultural heritage and farmland, Hershey makes the perfect setting for this type of market,” says Market Director Danny George. “We truly feel a responsibility to the community to improve the health of the region through this outreach.”

The Farmers Market in Hershey & Summer Concert series is a family and pet friendly, outdoor market experience, followed each week by a free outdoor concert featuring regional and national bands, sponsored by local businesses. New this year, the market will also feature free, weekly children’s programming in conjunction with local libraries, as well as cooking demonstrations featuring recipes using fresh market products.

Voted one of the top 10 farmers markets in the country by the American Farmland Trust, the The Farmers Market in Hershey is open every Thursday through October. The market has also been honored with a Spirit of Excellence award by Modern Healthcare magazine for its commitment to community wellness.
