School Wellness Councils

On Wednesday, December 10, 2014, PRO Wellness Center, along with special guest David Genova from the Pottstown School District, discussed how schools can establish and sustain a wellness council. Topics included:

  • an overview of wellness councils,
  • information about how your school can find members for the wellness council,
  • strategies for creating a council and keeping it active and engaged over time, and
  • lessons learned from the Pottstown School District.

On Thursday, September 25, 2014, PRO Wellness Center, along with special guest Megan Diehl from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, hosted a webinar discussion on how school assessments can lead to healthier schools. Topics included:

  • an overview of school health assessments
  • resources available to schools interested in completing an assessment
  • information on how your school can team up with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation to review and update wellness policies and programs for your students, staff and community

School Nutrition: Rethink How Your Students Refuel

On Wednesday, May 21, 2014, the PRO Wellness Center hosted a webinar on how to refresh nutrition in your school! Topics included:

      1. School meal and smart snack guidelines for the 2014/2015 school year and beyond;
      2. Tips for involving all members of the school community in promoting healthy food choices; and
      3. Tools and resources for fun and factual nutrition education.

In addition Kathryn Hoy, MFN, RD, CDN, joined us from the Cornell Center for Behavioral Economics in Child Nutrition Programs (BEN Center). Kate shared information and resources from The Smarter Lunchrooms Movement, an initiative designed to equip school lunchrooms with evidence-based tools that improve child eating behaviors and thus improve the health of children.

Move it Outside with CSPAP! 03.25.14

Reenergize physical activity in your school and community this Spring using components of your Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program (CSPAP).

On Tuesday, March 25, 2014, the PRO Wellness Center hosted a webinar on how to move it outside this Spring while developing your CSPAP in the following areas:

1.     Physical activity during the school day
2.     Physical activity before and after school
3.     Family and community engagement

Our special guest, Anthony Johnson, Deputy Director of the Partnership Transportation Management Association of Montgomery County, shared best practices for how his organization and a local school partnered to create a bike share program and increased mobile transportation in their community.

Comprehensive School Physical Activity Programs: Building One Piece at a Time 11.21.13

On Thursday, November 21, 2013, Penn State Hershey PRO Wellness Center hosted a webinar on Comprehensive School Physical Activity Programs (CSPAP). This webinar included an overview of CSPAP. Guest speakers shared best practices for implementing the five components of this program:

1) High-quality physical education
2) Physical activity during the school day
3) Physical activity before and after school
4) Staff involvement
5) Family and community engagement

CSPAP can be implemented in all schools and is a great framework for developing or enhancing a healthy school environment.

Walk to School Day 09.17.13

If you were unable to attend our complimentary Walk to School Day (WTSD) webinar that included ideas for hosting a WTSD event, you are welcome to view the archived version below. Special guests showcased their experience with WTSD and other Safe Routes to School best practices. You can also view the webinar presentation slides.

Walk to School Day events can be held by all schools, regardless of their size or walkability and all schools are encouraged to hold an event!
